Temple Ner Shalom was formed in August 1984 and since that time has played a leading role in the spiritual and secular life of the San Luis Obispo Jewish Community. It is the only Conservative Congregation on the Central Coast and is affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.
 
The philosophy of the founding families of Temple Ner Shalom has remained constant; it is based on the belief that Judaism is a dynamic, progressive way of life. While cherishing the traditions and practices bequeathed by the wisdom of our Jewish past, Temple Ner Shalom recognizes that Judaism is an ever-evolving religion and culture endowed with the ability to adapt itself to modern times.
 
Initially, the eight founding member families conducted all synagogue functions in members homes. That arrangement served the congregation well in its early years and contributed to our goal of having as much member participation as possible in all aspects of synagogue life. We continue to hold regular end of Shabbat songfest/potlucks in members homes, incorporating a magical Havdalah service in an unparalleled extended family environment. In 2002, we realized a 10-year dream moving into our beautiful multi-purpose facility located on a 10-acre property in San Luis Obispo. This 2500 square foot facility enables us to hold our services, meetings, religious classes, and other events in one location.
 
As we have grown we have established fine Religious School and Hebrew programs, in addition to offering our choir, Bar/Bat Mitvah preparation, observance of all Jewish holidays, and a variety of Adult Education classes. Temple Ner Shalom's commitment to the Conservative Movement and its major role in observance of Judaism continues to nurture our Temple family. We invite you to join us.
